What the 2015 Vormetric Insider Threat Report Results Mean for Cloud Providers

We’ve just released our third annual Vormetric Insider Threat Report – Global Edition, and I thought I’d share with you a roll up of what I found most significant for cloud providers from the data. We’re especially happy with the results this year – polling was provided by Harris Poll, an especially strong global survey organization, with results from 818 IT Decision makers in both US and Global enterprises.  The author for the report is once again Ovum Analyst Andrew Kellett – an expert in global IT Security technologies and risks for enterprise customers.

It won’t be any surprise that enterprises are worried about their cloud and SaaS implementations. They were most worried about sensitive data stored in cloud applications, and also list cloud as one of the top three locations where high volumes of that data were stored. Enterprises have consistently listed security and privacy as top concerns as they adopt cloud platforms and SaaS applications. It has to do with the fact that they simply don’t have the visibility and control into people, infrastructure, plant and organization that they do when using their own resources.

Data Volumes and Worries About Sensitive DataContrast this also with our findings in 2013 – Data residing on employee PCs was the top worry at 49%. Adoption and concerns are going hand in hand – as enterprises adopt cloud it moves higher on their list of concerns.

Another interesting point – Industry segments had some variations about cloud concerns. Retail topped the list with Cloud the top location where they have volumes of sensitive data at 47% (even over databases and servers) and cloud also topped their list of worries for data at 51% (over big data and databases both at 37%). I’d take the hint if I was pursuing retail customers for my cloud or SaaS environment and find out what it will take to make them feel secure – It will be good for business.

2015 ITR top IT spending prioritiesWhat’s more, the priorities for protecting enterprise data have changed. Until this year compliance has always been the top reason for protecting enterprise data. This year, preventing a data breach incident is for the first time at the top of the list with 50% citing preventing a data breach incident as a top priority in IT security spending. In 2014, compliance topped the list at 40% and in 2013 compliance was also the largest concern, with data breaches a distant second.

What does this mean for cloud and SaaS providers? It means that when courting enterprise business, you need to have your security stance front and center. It means that even if you have met the enterprise bar for compliance, your offerings need to take into account that much wider data sets than just compliance data now need protecting. It means that even if your initial engagement is with a single business unit, and bypassed corporate IT controls as a result, that even that business is in jeopardy without clear security controls, commitments and policies. With the threat level as high as it is today, it’s only a matter of time before you are requested and required to meet security needs to continue doing business, or to expand your foot print with the customer.
